\"pumpkin\"<\/a>On Tuesday, October 27, Fort Hays State University\u2019s Residence Hall Association held their annual Halloween Safe Trick-or-Treat event in McMindes Hall. This event allowed for children throughout the Hays community to dress-up in costumes, and go trick-or-treating in an environment that was both safe and fun. Children and parents were able to play games, and receive candy and other small prizes, as well as have the opportunity to get better acquainted with students and staff at Fort Hays State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlie Snethen, a resident advisor in McMindes Hall, was really pleased with the turnout of this event. This year was Snethen\u2019s first time participating and organizing the Safe Trick-or-Treat, and she describes it as a wonderful experience for both the children and the students here at FHSU. \u201cI think it is a good way for the community to get together and do something that they know is safe and fun for their kids, especially since Halloween can sometimes get a little crazy.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Snethen believes one thing that makes this event great is the fact that students have the opportunity to be civically engaged without even leaving their dorm room. \u00a0She states that it can be difficult for some students to go outside of their comfort zone, and this is a way of starting the process of getting them more involved with the community around them. \u201cIt is a good way for students to see how they can help and get involved, and make a positive impact at FHSU and in the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On the planning side, students involved in McMindes Hall Council, as well as students from other residence halls were able to gain valuable leadership skills while working together to put on this event. <\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, the Safe Trick-or-Treat event was very successful. Students at Fort Hays, as well as people in the community had the chance to get to know one another, and celebrate Halloween in a safe, family-friendly environment. This event is favorite among students and staff here at Fort Hays State University, and will no doubt continue to be in years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n
