On Monday, the Center for Student Involvement will host its annual event in recognition of World AIDS Day at the feature wall lobby in the Memorial Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
World AIDS Day is designed to help raise awareness about HIV\/AIDS and\u00a0recognize those who live with HIV\/AIDS and those who have lost their lives in the fight against the disease.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important for college students to understand the topic and become more informed and aware about the topic,\u201d said Alma Hidalgo, graduate assistant in the Center for Student Involvement.<\/p>\n
The purpose of the local event is to provide Fort Hays State University students with more information about HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to help spread awareness and not let people look at HIV\/AIDS as a death sentence,” said Amber White, coordinator of Diversity Affairs and Student Involvement.<\/p>\n
Red ribbons will be given out as a symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV\/AIDS. Cupcakes, informational cards and condoms will also be provided for students.<\/p>\n
Students should not only become more informed about HIV\/AIDS, but should take precautions if they are sexually active or once they decide to become sexually active, according to White.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing your status is important,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n
The Student Health Center will be giving free testing for sexually transmitted diseases all through the day, as well. Students are normally charged for these tests.<\/p>\n
\u201cGetting tested does not mean you are currently being sexually active, but it means that you are being sexually responsible,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n
