Fort Hays State University had four individual champions in its season opening tournament, as Adam Ludwin<\/a><\/dfn> (125),Noah Killip<\/a><\/dfn> (141), Jon Inman<\/a><\/dfn> (184) and Trey Page<\/a><\/dfn> (285) all won their respective weight classes at the Bethany Swede Open.\u00a0 Saturday’s event also saw two Tigers \u2013 Anthony Calderon<\/a><\/dfn> (133) and Bryce Lewis<\/a><\/dfn>(165) \u2013 pick up second place finishes and William Homalon<\/a><\/dfn> (133) took third wrestling unattached.<\/p>\n

All told, 23 wrestlers represented FHSU (attached and unattached) at the open tournament, and though team scores were not officially kept, the Tigers had 15 pins and put together a 73-35 record for the day.<\/p>\n

Ludwin started his day with a bye before pinning Alpha Diallo (1:22) to reach to the quarterfinals.\u00a0 From there, he advanced on an injury default and a 4-2 decision over Kevin Bonilla (Missouri Valley College) in the semifinals.\u00a0 His final victory of the day was a 10-6 decision over MVC’s Dennis Welch, giving Ludwin the title.<\/p>\n

After a bye to start the tournament, Killip reached the semfinals with two major decision victories, 15-3 over Chris Youngblood (Bacone College) and 13-2 over Alan Olivas (MVC). Killip then put together two straight decisions, knocking off Dane Edwards (Bethany), 2-1, before taking the championship, 2-0, over Josh Lopez (York).<\/p>\n

Inman cruised through the tournament, reaching the finals with a 10-4 decision over Dalton Schutjer (Grandview College) and two pins \u2013 Juan Ortiz (Newman) in 2:09 and Spencer Wilson (Bethany) in 4:24.\u00a0 In the finals, Inman won by major decision, 21-9, over Caleb Hawes of Central Oklahoma (unattached).<\/p>\n

Page matched Inman’s dominant performance with a 5-0 record of his own, starting the day with a fall (1:10 over Payton Napoli of MVC) and two straight 15-0 technical falls, taking down Kurland Parks (Central Baptist College) and Tyler Smith (unattached).\u00a0 In the semifinals, Page won by 14-5 major decision against Daniel Mueller (MVC) and knocked off Sai Lotulelei (York) in the finals, 4-2.<\/p>\n

Calderon went 4-1 for the day, picking up wins over Ernesto Escobar (10-8) of Grandview College and Ty Kolterman (5-3) of Bethany to reach the semifinals after an opening round bye.\u00a0 Calderon knocked off Ryan Stearns (MVC) with a 10-0 major decision before dropping the finals match to Dustin Reed of Central Oklahoma by a fall in 1:24.<\/p>\n

Lewis began the tournament with a bye as well before grabbing a 7-6 decision over Cole Kemna (MVC-Unattached).\u00a0 He followed that effort with another narrow decision (3-2) against Jacob Blackwell (Grandview College) and a 9-4 decision against Jared Sterling (MVC).\u00a0 In the finals, Lewis found himself matched against the No. 1 nationally ranked wrestler, Chris Watson of Central Oklahoma, and lost by fall in 59 seconds.<\/p>\n

Arguably the gutsiest effort of the day, Homalon wrestled through six rounds of the consolation bracket to grab third place honors.\u00a0 After pinning David Wilson (Bacone College) in 43 seconds, Homalon dropped a 10-7 decision to Alberto Jaramillo (York) that send him to the wrestle back rounds.\u00a0 Homalon ran off five straight victories, including a revenge-pin in 1:51 against Jaramillo in the consolation semifinals to reach the third-place match.\u00a0 Once there, Homalon took down Stearns (MVC), 10-6.<\/p>\n

The Tigers return to the mats next Saturday at the Northern Colorado Open in Greeley, Colo.<\/p>\n
