The Department of Art & Design will be having their annual Scholarship Art Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first floor of Rarick Hall at Fort Hays State University.<\/p>\n
The Art and Design Scholarship Art Sale is a 30 year tradition with a goal of raising money for the Art and Design scholarship fund at the FHSU Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n Scholarships are awarded in the spring after the Student Honors Exhibition in Moss-Thorns Gallery. The Scholarship Art Sale is a competitive exhibition, with the prizes being scholarships for the students. \u00a0Nearly $2,500 is awarded in scholarships each year to 10 or more students at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n Original artwork for sale is created by students and faculty including,<\/p>\n Michael Jilg<\/strong> received both his bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in art from Fort Hays State University. \u00a0After working as a professional artist, in 1981 he returned to Hays as a painting instructor. \u00a0He was awarded the Kansas Governor\u2019s Artist Award in 1991 and the President\u2019s Distinguished Scholar Award in 1996.<\/p>\n Kathleen Kuchar<\/strong> is a\u00a0Professor Emerita of Art at Fort Hays State University, maintains a studio in Hays, Kansas, and teaches workshops regionally and nationally.<\/p>\n John C. Thorns<\/strong> received his undergraduate degree in art and taught\u00a0as a professor in the Department of Art and Design. \u00a0Thorns worked tirelessly to revitalize the Hays art community, and the art life at FHSU. \u00a0He passed away this past summer at the age of 88.<\/p>\n Frank Nichols<\/strong> came to\u00a0Fort Hays State University in 1967 as an instructor in the Division of Applied Arts. Nichols was promoted to assistant professor in 1971, associate professor in 1976 and professor in 1982. He taught printmaking most of his career prior to his retirement in 1999.
