{"id":100565,"date":"2026-10-23T11:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T16:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=100565"},"modified":"2026-10-23T11:52:41","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T16:52:41","slug":"area-students-exhibit-engineering-and-driving-prowess-in-annual-electrorally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=100565","title":{"rendered":"Area students exhibit engineering and driving prowess in annual ElectroRally"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By TANNER MAWHIRTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tiger Media Network<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 8, Hays hosted the annual Fall ElectroRally event where high school teams from all over the state and region raced their student-made electric vehicles in an hour-long most-laps-completed contest.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Annual Fall ElectroRally\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-5-3Qqb7HOE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal of this race is to do as many laps within one hour; most laps win,\u201d said Adam Moritz, an FHSU alum and ElectroRally coach at St. John High School. \u201cThe best cars will do about maybe 68 laps in an hour, so they&#8217;re running 55-53-second laps. I think the best part is kids get to be out here and have fun, be safe, of course, but have fun and do the best we can.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While racing a student-made vehicle might sound fun to most, there are actually a lot of dangers and effort involved in each vehicle that races. Ayden Lewis, a student from Scott City, talks about how much time and effort their team put into a single car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis green one here is the one we\u2019ve done the quickest work on; we got it done in a year, starting our freshman year in 2024,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cIt\u2019s just non-stop work; you\u2019re always tweaking something. You\u2019re always checking your bolts and stuff.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell Kern, a student from Ellinwood, said they usually have three or four races a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis race is the first race of the year,\u201d he said. \u201cWe usually have three or four more in the spring, so this is the test race and if something goes wrong, we\u2019ll spend the few months we have to fix it up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving can be dangerous, especially with drivers who are inexperienced or driving on unsafe road conditions. These are some of the factors the drivers from St. John noticed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a little scary, came close a few times and rubbed a few people, but it was fun, fast, and a little scary. Every once in a while, you got one car coming up on you and tapping you in the back a little bit, but it makes it fun,\u201d Makennon Sanders said. \u201cTracks a little rough, could definitely use a little work in some spots. Lots of bumps, lots of holes, but overall pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson Mawhirter also offers his advice as a driver on the scary conditions he has to navigate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing as a driver is to make sure you don\u2019t get scared of corners and people, and make sure you stay tight or you lose,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make sure the drivers are aware of any hazards or issues on the track or with their vehicles, each team is connected to other crew members who are watching from the sides of the track, communicating via walkie-talkies or earpods.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikeal Nemec from St. John explains his job as a warner\/timekeeper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can listen to the driver\/pilot, and we can usually tell them what to do or warn them of a crash that\u2019s ahead or anything like that with earpods,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nemec has other jobs as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo just write down their times and laps,\u201d Nemec said. \u201cMostly sit and watch while our other teammates walk around to make sure none of our guys are going to crash.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the event, Scott City placed first with 71 laps and St. John placed second with 64 laps.
