A calm presence on the sideline, encouragement after mistakes, and constant communication have become noticeable parts of Garcia Ramser’s first season as head coach of Fort Hays State volleyball.<\/p>\n\n\n

During warmups and pregame, Ramser works closely with the setter, communicates with other players, and offers encouragement. Throughout matches, Ramser maintains a calm demeanor, talking with players as they enter and leave the court and helping them adjust when mistakes occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During timeouts, Ramser looks for agreement and understanding from the players rather than simply giving instructions. Between sets, Ramser remains attentive to questions and uses encouragement to reassure players after mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That approach has also been noticeable to FHSU players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior libero Delaney Gish said Ramser can help the team regain momentum during difficult moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEncouragement,\u201d Gish said of how Ramser motivates his team. \u201cHe’s a very positive person who brings a light out in any situation that we may need help with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow junior libero Haylee Wolf said Ramser’s timeouts also give the team an opportunity to regroup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe gives us time to recuperate as people and as a team,\u201d Wolf said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest differences Gish and Wolf have noticed is Ramser’s response to mistakes. Rather than immediately focusing on what went wrong, Ramser encourages players to recognize and understand their own errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe brings a big understanding that errors are going to happen, and that’s the game of volleyball,\u201d Gish said. \u201cInstead of telling you what you did wrong, he asks if you know what you did wrong and is very encouraging of all things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That communication has been visible during matches. When FHSU falls behind, Ramser has used timeouts to slow the game down and encourage the players. In one instance, the Tigers scored a point immediately following a timeout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramser also emphasizes effort, encouraging players to continue hustling even when a play does not result in a successful save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Ramser, the decision to come to Fort Hays State was influenced by more than volleyball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe biggest thing was probably throughout the interview process, getting to meet with administration and talk about what we believe can happen here, volleyball-wise, long term,\u201d Ramser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramser said seeing how invested families and the Hays community are in the program also influenced the decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the season has begun, Ramser said the team’s ability to come together quickly has been one of the biggest surprises. FHSU went 4-0 during the Tiger Classic to open the season.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far this year, I think the biggest surprise has been how quickly as a group we’ve come together,\u201d Ramser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new coach said the younger players have also fit in quickly with the returning players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think our freshman, our younger group, doesn’t look any different than our older group in a positive way,\u201d Ramser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For FHSU volleyball, Ramser’s first season has brought a coaching style centered on communication, encouragement and allowing players to learn from mistakes while building chemistry across the roster.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
