The Tigers (17-8, 9-7) erased a 15-point first-half deficit and outscored the Jets 17-9 in overtime to secure a 91-83 win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew they were capable,\u201d Fort Hays State head coach Mark Johnson said. \u201c(Cyrus) Shaw averages double figures and he showed it again tonight. But the Tigers responded with a 19-6 run to close within 35-33 at halftime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat stretch at the end of the first half was huge,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cTo cut it from 14 or 15 down to 2, that set the tone that we were right there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tigers briefly built a 7-point lead midway through the second half before Newman answered with an 11-0 run to go back in front. The final minutes of regulation turned into a back-and-forth battle. Juju Ramirez scored on a put-back with 1:20 left to pull FHSU within 1, and Dan Mukuna tied the game at 74 with a free throw with 41 seconds remaining. Neither team scored again in regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle Grill said the Tigers never felt out of control, even when trailing big early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a fast-paced game, you can make runs quickly,\u201d Grill said. \u201cPanicking doesn\u2019t help anything. We stayed calm and trusted what we do, especially at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overtime swung in Fort Hays State\u2019s favor after a technical foul on Newman. The Tigers followed with a 9-0 run. Grill hit a 3-pointer to give FHSU the lead, Ramirez added a fast-break basket, and Grill knocked down another 3 to push the lead to 6. Newman never got closer than 4 the rest of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShooters shoot,\u201d Grill said. \u201cWe stepped up with confidence. In overtime, it actually felt comfortable because we trusted our free throws and our shots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jahvari Martino led the Tigers with a career-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Mukuna recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Grill added 18 points with four 3-pointers, while Lucas Hammeke had 13 points and 4 assists. FHSU shot 53.7% from the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson credited Martino\u2019s two-way effort and the team\u2019s ability to close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had some self-inflicted mistakes, but we found a way,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cLate in games, it comes down to stops, rebounds and free throws.
