MARSHALL, Mo. – In one of the biggest women’s wrestling tournaments in the country that featured 610 wrestlers representing nearly 30 different schools,\u00a0Nichole Moore<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0and\u00a0Lexie Lopez<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0of Fort Hays State placed at the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday (Nov. 23). Moore placed third in the 138 bracket, while Lopez was fifth in the 124 bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moore wrestled the most matches (10) of any FHSU wrestler in the tournament, posting a record of 9-1 to finish third. She reached the quarterfinals of the championship side of the bracket before blazing her way through the consolation side for a third-place finish. Her only loss was to Viktorya Torres of McKendree, the preseason No. 3 ranked wrestler in the NCAA at 138, by a 3-1 decision. For her nine wins in the tournament, Moore put together a mix of three falls, two tech falls, and four decisions. Her fastest fall of 30 seconds she recorded in her first match on Friday and then capped her weekend with a strong 10-0 tech fall over Madeline Barton of Quincy University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lopez was right behind Moore in amount of matches wrestled (9), posting a record of 7-2 overall. Lopez won her first two matches before running into Shelby Moore of McKendree, the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 124 in the NCAA. Lopez won four more matches in a row before a loss to Joanna Vanderwood, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the NAIA, in the consolation semifinals. But, Lopez bounced back for a 7-3 decision over Cali Leng from the University of Iowa in the fifth-place match. Lopez had five decisions and two tech falls to account for her seven wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella Cross<\/a><\/dfn> (110), Jamie Laswell<\/a><\/dfn> (131), and Dylen Ritchey<\/a><\/dfn> (138) all notched five wins in the tournament, while Hailey Conley<\/a><\/dfn> (207) and Lindsey Lopez<\/a><\/dfn> (117) each picked up four wins. Ten of the 23 Tigers competing had winning records for the weekend, while five went 2-2 in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
