After getting rained out for the first day of scheduled competition on Friday, the Tigers opened their Saturday with a hard-fought 4-3 win over CSU Pueblo before falling in their second contest of the day 6-1 to Colorado Mesa. FHSU is now 2-1 overall on the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fort Hays State 4, CSU Pueblo 3<\/strong><br>The Tigers picked up the crucial team point in doubles play before splitting singles contests to win by one. The match came down to the result of No. 6 singles, where&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/8a40d07f-2633-4bde-9c5e-0cf760a12081?elinkdata=214291\">Bethan Gill<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;remained undefeated by posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over her opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tigers swept doubles matches with the No. 1 team of&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/964fecec-f430-413d-bb0c-c67c34c637b3?elinkdata=214291\">Irina Alfonso<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/8459e797-fcb9-487e-907a-ab801a904289?elinkdata=214291\">Fiorella Mendez<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and No. 2 team of&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/07d681c4-ad44-467f-9f44-cf76376a35b1?elinkdata=214291\">Ines Latorre<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/75b1b633-6142-424e-a8c1-eb0cf1392587?elinkdata=214291\">Shreethika Vangala<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;each winning by scores of 6-2 to clinch the team point.&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/72acf66e-c4ca-4203-837f-43cc155a2c58?elinkdata=214291\">Grace Unruh<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and Gill added a third doubles win for good measure by winning a tiebreak 7-6 (7-2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfonso (No. 1) and Unruh (No. 5) secured the first two team points in singles play with straight-set wins. Alfonso won 6-1, 6-3 and Unruh won 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile the Thunderwolves picked up wins at No. 2, 3, and 4 to even the match. Gill pushed the Tigers back over the top with her straight-set win at No. 6. Vangala fell just short in a tiebreaking set of her No. 2 match, but forced the decisive set with a 6-4 second set win. Latorre generated four points within her No. 4 match and Mendez won three points within her No. 3 match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/9413b265-4cf8-4489-adbc-15e878dbcba3?elinkdata=214291\">Ines Steeman<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;also played an exhibition singles match and won by a score of 7-5.&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/17ad3882-49dc-4801-8f36-d6275e9189ed?elinkdata=214291\">Heidi Lubbers<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/a9599594-fecc-4aeb-a8be-9c86c573b460?elinkdata=214291\">Hope Lubbers<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;fell in a tight exhibition doubles match, also by a score of 7-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colorado Mesa 6, Fort Hays State 1<\/strong><br><dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/075a2dae-cf2f-4904-852a-193cea7f467b?elinkdata=214291\">Grace Unruh<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;kept FHSU from being swept in the second match of the day against Colorado Mesa. She won her No. 6 singles match 6-4, 6-2 to give the Tigers their lone point in a 6-1 loss. The Mavericks swept doubles play for their first team point and won the No. 1-5 singles matches for the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At No. 2 doubles,&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/7d2ec777-ea03-4a8b-88ca-4728697ef400?elinkdata=214291\">Irina Alfonso<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/36807011-5056-4675-a721-9b439e0c1577?elinkdata=214291\">Fiorella Mendez<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;fell just short in a tightly contested battle, needing a tiebreak to decide their match. The Mavericks took the tiebreak by a score of 7-5. Both the No. 1 team of&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/73314f96-40aa-44fb-b4bc-391ea5146e5f?elinkdata=214291\">Shreethika Vangala<\/a><\/dfn>\/<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/13d8a36a-bb12-4ead-bcf7-15f2200ed838?elinkdata=214291\">Ines Latorre<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;and the No. 3 team of&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/dfabe05c-39c8-4b8a-9411-e9ce7e361fe0?elinkdata=214291\">Grace Unruh<\/a><\/dfn>\/<dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/fhsuathletics.com\/services\/go.ashx\/ede48378-8308-46a5-8ae5-46491a85fa22?elinkdata=214291\">Bethan Gill<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;fell by scores of 6-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from Unruh winning her singles match in straight sets, Latorre pushed her opponent to a tiebreaking set at the No. 4 position. After falling 6-2 in the first set, she bounced back for a 6-3 win in the second before falling in the tiebreak set 10-6. Gill was able to win three points in each set of her match at the No. 5 position. Vangala won three points within the second set of her No. 1 match and Alfonso won three points throughout her No. 2 match.
