{"id":66957,"date":"2022-08-31T13:57:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T18:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=66957"},"modified":"2022-08-31T13:57:49","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T18:57:49","slug":"miss-kansas-to-join-panel-discussion-on-students-trauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=66957","title":{"rendered":"Miss Kansas to join panel discussion on students, trauma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Hays State University will host a panel discussion on the impact of childhood trauma at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20, in the Black and Golf Room in the university\u2019s Memorial Union Building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto federal statistics, more than two-thirds of children in the U.S. report\nexperiencing a traumatic event by age 16. Adverse childhood experiences and\ntrauma disproportionately affect rural schoolchildren, putting them at greater\nrisk of academic underachievement throughout their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miss\nKansas 2022, Ayanna Hensley will join a panel of experts in this field. The\ndaughter of parents who struggled with substance abuse and incarceration,\nAyanna decided to make promoting awareness of the impact of trauma and\nconnecting those affected to intervention options the focus of her \u201cSocial\nImpact Initiative\u201d as Miss Kansas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.\nSarah Lancaster, an assistant professor in Fort Hays State University\u2019s College\nof Education and an expert in this field, offers this preview of the September\n20 panel discussion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTrauma\nis much more far-reaching than some realize.<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Chronic\nstress, poverty, parents in prison, witnessing an act of violence or feeling\nthreatened by one, natural disasters, medical issues, etc., can all be trauma.\nThe basic needs of all students have to be met before learning can occur.
