Crowding into Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center, hundreds of students gathered for the Tiger Kickoff event Thursday night. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cT-I-G-E-R, Tigers, Tigers, who we are,\u201d the group chanted.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event, one of the many events of Welcome Weekend, allowed students to get to know each other while also learning more about campus life. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t wait to make the most of your time,\u201d Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Taylor Kriley said.  \u201cGo out and be great Tigers.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Government Association President Ryan Stanley talked about why he loves Fort Hays.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLike all things in life, it is important that you go out and seek what you want,\u201d Stanley said. \u201cAnd this university is full, full of people who want to help you and provide you with resources and ideas.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s understandable not to have everything figured out Stanley said, but he encouraged students to take some chances and try new things. \t\t
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can\u2019t express that enough; whether it\u2019s internships, professional experiences, study abroad, hands-on learning, or social engagement, they can be found here,\u201d Stanley said. \t 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanley also said that new students might not realize just how supportive the Fort Hays community is and how important it is to ask questions. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMake sure you\u2019re asking questions,\u201d Stanley said. \u201cAsk tons of questions. If you ever feel lost physically, academically, emotionally, spiritually, there are people who can help.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanley admitted feeling lost his freshman year and decided to join the Student Government Association because he asked a question and started a conversation. He\u2019s now SGA president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of Student Engagement Shianne Cokely also said she was also nervous about adjusting to college.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m from a small town,\u201d Cokely said. \u201cI knew everybody. It\u2019s not the case when you go to college, right? It\u2019s kind of scary. There\u2019s a lot of new people.\u201d\t\t \t \t \t
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cokely said she was successful in college because she got involved and had staff members who were invested in her and her success.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have people who invested in us, and cared for us and believed in us,\u201d Cokely said. \u201cAnd we want to be those people for you. All the staff that are here, we believe in you. We care about you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students were then dismissed by degree programs to go play games on the quad. There, volunteers led activities and students were given T-shirts to wear for TGOF. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure exactly what I expected from this,\u201d student Gavin Tuttle said. \u201cI liked the balance between information and fun activities like the chants and the rock, paper, scissors. I\u2019m looking forward to the school year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
