{"id":64312,"date":"2022-03-24T10:03:46","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T15:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=64312"},"modified":"2022-03-24T10:03:49","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T15:03:49","slug":"first-responders-art-collaboration-training-workshop-coming-to-fhsu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=64312","title":{"rendered":"First Responders Art Collaboration training workshop coming to FHSU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BY ALICIA FEYERHERM<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first session of the First Responders Art Collaboration Training will be March 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m in the atrium of the Schmidt Art and Design building. This art workshop brings together FHSU students, individuals with cognitive disabilities and local first responders.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole goal of the workshop is to bring people together to create empathy and friendship to create conversations,\u201d Art professor Amy Schmierbach said. \u201cSo while we\u2019re making art, the heart of the workshop is just getting to know people who are different.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Persons with disabilities are two and a half times more likely to experience violence in their life than those without a disability.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPersons with cognitive disabilities really rely on first responders for help,\u201d Schmierbach said. \u201cSometimes they may even experience violence when trying to get that assistance because they may be unable to communicate in a way that the first responders can understand.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event will help participants get to know each other in a low-pressure environment.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Fort Hays student is different than the person with the cognitive disability,\u201d Schmierbach said. They\u2019re also different than maybe the first responders.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group will be working on a weaving project. Schmierbach has done this project before when working with individuals with cognitive disabilities and says it\u2019s very accessible.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like drawing a picture,\u201d Schmierbach said. \u201cYou\u2019re holding a wooden needle and weaving back and forth so it\u2019s a little easier to grip.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three other workshops will be held.
