Faculty and students alike are grateful to be able to hold this year\u2019s completion ceremony for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) and the Academy of Mathematics and Science (AMS) in person after last year\u2019s seniors were honored on video because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021 ceremony to honor the 11th\ngraduating class of the program is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8. To ensure\nsufficient room for social distancing, the ceremony will be held in the\nspacious Beach\/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall instead of its\ntraditional location in the Memorial Union Ballroom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

KAMS is Kansas\u2019 premier early college\nresidential program designed to provide a STEM-focused academic experience for\ngifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. AMS is an early college\nprogram open to international and out-of-state domestic students, offering an\nunparalleled academic experience for gifted and talented high school students\nfrom around the country \u2013 and the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After returning home last March when the\ncoronavirus forced FHSU to move to remote operations for the remainder of the\nsemester, Angie Acred from Leavenworth was more than ready to return to campus\nin August for her senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is on the pre-med track and plans to\nmajor in biology when she continues her education at the University of Kansas\nin the fall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Acred said, \u201cshe will never\nforget her time at Fort Hays State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acred had no problem adjusting to making\nnew friends her first year in KAMS. Her mother is a major in the U.S. Army, and\nAngie has lived in six different states and has moved eight different times in\nher lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis second year at KAMS is the first\ntime since fourth grade that I\u2019ve attended the same school for two consecutive\nyears,\u201d she said. \u201cGoing to different schools is all I\u2019ve ever known.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn\u2019t take Acred long to learn how\nmuch she liked her new school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe research experience for undergrads\nhere at Fort Hays State will be so beneficial for me,\u201d she said. \u201cHere, we\nlearned so much from everyone. There were a lot of networking opportunities,\nand we were able to communicate with professionals in our field of study. At\nKAMS, you are offered so many more opportunities than a traditional high school\nsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that she \u201creally liked having\nthe smaller class sizes at FHSU. I had almost 300 people in my class at\nLeavenworth, and I didn\u2019t know a lot of my classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\u2019s ceremony will recognize 31\ngraduating seniors. Twenty of those will attend Saturday\u2019s completion ceremony,\nincluding one international student in AMS. The other 11 international students\nfrom South Korea and China were not able to return to FHSU for their senior\nyear because of COVID travel restrictions, and they will finish their classwork\nvirtually. This year\u2019s KAMS class comes from all four corners of the state,\nincluding rural, suburban, and urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student speakers for the ceremony are\nselected based on academic success achieved during their time in the program,\nalong with involvement in clubs\/activities, research, and community service.\nThis year\u2019s speakers will be Leo Harzman from Downs and Aum Patel from Salina.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
