{"id":46527,"date":"2019-08-14T10:38:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T15:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=46527"},"modified":"2019-08-14T10:38:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T15:38:59","slug":"dixon-named-presidents-distinguished-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=46527","title":{"rendered":"Dixon named President&#8217;s Distinguished Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Grady Dixon, professor of geosciences and interim dean of the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics, was announced today as the 2019 President\u2019s Distinguished Scholar at Fort Hays State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn his five years at\nthe university, Grady has over 40 published scholarly works. His research on\nweather and climate is at the forefront of his discipline,\u201d said Dr. Jill\nArensdorf, emcee of the ceremonies at the 2019 FHSU fall convocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has garnered over\nhalf a million dollars in grant monies, with the assistance of both\nundergraduate and graduate students,\u201d said Arensdorf, provost and vice\npresident for academic affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGrady, thank you for\nyour contributions to the university and to your discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President&#8217;s\nDistinguished Scholar Award was first conferred in 1989. All unclassified\nemployees of the university are eligible for consideration and are evaluated\nfor this honor by analysis of their performance in the categories of research\nand creative activities, service, and instruction. Acceptable levels of\nperformance must be demonstrated in service and instruction, with the primary\nfocus of this award on research and creative activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An evaluation\ncommittee, composed of five of the most recent award winners, reviews\napplications, and a recommendation is forwarded to President Tisa Mason. The\nprovost chairs the committee and is responsible for administering the award\nprocess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several other awards\nwere also presented at the convocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty Member of the\nYear, Dr. Laura Wilson, associate professor of geosciences and interim chair of\nthe department. Commerce Bank provides a $1,000 stipend for the award. The\naward was presented to her by Dr. Jill Arensdorf, provost and vice president of\nacademic affairs, and Deron O\u2019Connor, president of Commerce Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Faculty Member of\nthe Year is selected from the past year\u2019s recipients of faculty awards for\nteaching, for research and scholarly activity, and for service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson, and Dr. Nicholas\nCaporusso, instructor of informatics, were the winners of last year\u2019s awards\nfor research and scholarly activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2018-19 awards for\nservice went to two assistant professors of advanced education programs, Dr.\nKim Chappell and Dr. Elliot Isom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year\u2019s outstanding\nteaching awards went to Dr. C.D. Clark, associate professor of physics, and Dr.\nLanee (pronounced lah-NAY) Young, associate professor of mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Edmund Shearer\nFaculty Advisor of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Kim Chappell, assistant\nprofessor of advanced education programs in the College of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shearer Award is\npresented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic advising of\nstudents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shearer, a former chair\nof the Department of Chemistry, was known for the high value he placed on\nstudent advisement. &nbsp;One advisor can be recognized from each of the five\nacademic colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipient of this\naward will also be nominated for the National Academic Advising Association\nAward.&nbsp; Each FHSU winner will be presented a certificate and a monetary\naward. The nominees receive a stipend of $150, and the winning recipient\nreceives $500. Commerce Bank also sponsors this award.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides Chappell, the\nnominees were Karrie Simpson Voth, professor and chair of the Department of Art\nand Design, representing the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences;\nDr. Robert Lloyd, assistant professor of management in the W.R. and Yvonne\nRobbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship; Anita Walters, instructor of\nhealth and human performance in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences;\nand Joe Chretien, associate professor of applied technology in the Peter Werth\nCollege of Science, Technology and Mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Tamara Lynn,\nassociate professor and interim chair of the Department of Criminal Justice,\nwas named the John Heinrichs Outstanding Research Mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award recognizes\nfaculty members for their commitment, time and energy in promoting\nundergraduate research. All current faculty and unclassified staff members at\nlevels comparable to academic faculty are eligible. The winner\u2019s home\ndepartment is awarded $500 of budget funding to benefit the recipient. The\nOffice of the Provost, the Undergraduate Research Environment Committee, and the\nOffice of Scholarships and Sponsored Projects sponsors the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cClosing the Loop\u201d\nDepartmental Award went to the Department of Advanced Education Programs. The\ndepartment receives $2,000, provided by Voya Financial, in additional operating\nbudget for the year. This award recognizes a department that implements\nimprovements in its degree programs.\n\nThe Department of Management won the Advancing\nAssessment Award, receiving an additional $1,000 in operating budget funds,\nsponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Office for Institutional\nEffectiveness and Quality Improvement.
