{"id":46518,"date":"2019-08-14T08:01:21","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T13:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=46518"},"modified":"2019-08-14T08:01:26","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T13:01:26","slug":"hays-symphony-invites-kids-to-help-conduct-concert-of-movie-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tigermedianet.com\/?p=46518","title":{"rendered":"Hays Symphony invites kids to help conduct concert of movie music"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By UNIVERSITY RELATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the formal opening of its 2019-20 season, the Hays Symphony at Fort Hays State University is inviting youths to help conduct the orchestra during its Movie Music Pops Concert on Friday, Aug. 23, at the Downtown Pavilion during the annual Fall Gallery Walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Jeff Jordan, director of FHSU bands,\nwill give a short conducting lesson for kids at 6:30 p.m., before the concert\nbegins at 7 p.m. Participants will then be invited to conduct the concert\u2019s\nfinal piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to take advantage of being\noutdoors, out of the auditorium,\u201d said Hays Symphony publicity chair Cathy\nDrabkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd we wanted to capitalize on the\nfamily focus of the Gallery Walk, so we decided to invite area children to help\nconduct,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert will feature music from\n\u201cPirates of the Caribbean,\u201d \u201cStar Wars,\u201d \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d \u201cE.T.,\u201d \u201cThe Wizard\nof Oz\u201d and other popular movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think kids will recognize the music\nthey\u2019ll get to conduct,\u201d said Drabkin. \u201cIt will be a blast for the kids, and\ndefinitely a video-worthy moment for mom and dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In keeping with the movie theme, the\nDowntown Hays Development Corporation, which is hosting the Symphony\u2019s\nperformance, will provide popcorn and drinks for concertgoers. Guests are\nwelcome to stay for a single piece or the entire show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert will also be an introduction\nto the orchestra\u2019s new conductor, Dr. Brian Buckstead, who comes to FHSU from\nDuluth, Minn. Buckstead is also the new violin and viola professor on the FHSU\nDepartment of Music faculty. He willl be joined by Jordan and Dr. Peter\nLillpop, assistant director of FHSU bands, as conductors for the pops concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert will last about an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hays Symphony has been entertaining\nand educating audiences for over 100 years. Its musicians are FHSU students,\nfaculty and staff, local music teachers, community members from the area, and\nguest musicians from around the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings when\nthe university is in session. The orchestra performs four to six concerts a\nyear.\n\nAll Hays Symphony\u2019s concerts are free of charge,\nthanks to its donors and supporters.
