On July 27, 2019, Hays held its annual Bazaar on the Bricks. The event, which lasted from 7 am to 1 pm, featured more than 20 local vendors, all of which sold discounted goods specifically prepared for this day. The event was free to attend, and vendors from all around town moved onto the busy street, eager and happy to sell their goods. Sales racks full of clothing, purses, shoes, as well as carts of food and flowers,\u00a0 filled the roadway. Everywhere people looked there was something new to look at, something new to explore about Hays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event itself is organized by the Downtown Hay Development Corporation (DHDC). Created in 2001, the organization has been deeply involved with the development of Hays. It heavily focuses on maintaining and growing community projects which bring awareness to the arts, government, history, and local commerce. The DHDC has organized a stunning variety of events, including the Bazaar on the Bricks, for the community. Sara Bloom is the executive director of the DHDC, and is closely tied to this event. It had been advertised on various social media sources in Hays for weeks, building up the public’s anticipation for it.

\u201cThe event boasts wonderful kids activities like carnival games, snacks, train rides, free crafts and more – it is a BAZAAR for the whole family,\u201d the website states. \u201cAll vendors are welcome, a large number of merchants from Downtown will participate, but independent distributors of jewelry, beauty and health products, art, and more are welcome to set up as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This lovingly crafted idea has allowed several sellers to operate by selling their own handmade goods. Just as a farmers market brings about sales and distribution of food locally, the Bazaar allows for local community members to keep their crafts and goods within the city, spreading local talent, and adding to the rich culture that Hays cultivates.

Amazingly, the turnout for this event was phenomenal. Community members flocked to the downtown area to search for the best prices. There was a furniture sale from a vendor, as well as many food sellers, both organic foods and baked goods. Several local artists also took their place on the street, selling their skills and offering live painting sessions. The Bazaar also offered several family-themed games, for the enjoyment of people of all ages. There was a mini-train which drove around, carrying children, as well as some vendors having small prizes at their stands. There were organizations giving out pins and t-shirts. There was a sense of close-knit community spirit, seeing peoples goods which they worked hard on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI come here as often as I can…It’s not just for shopping, it’s just a plain good time.\u201d remarked one of the shoppers.
