Nixon had to turn over subpoenaed White House tape recordings to the Watergate special prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>1783- Revolutionary Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas, Venezuela.<br \/>\n1847- Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake in present-day Utah.<br \/>\n1862- Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, died in Kinderhook, N.Y., at age 79.<br \/>\n1866- Tennessee became the first state to be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War.<br \/>\n1937- The state of Alabama dropped charges against five black men accused of raping two white women in the Scottsboro case.<br \/>\n1959- During a visit to the Soviet Union, Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev compared the merits of capitalism and communism in the &#8220;kitchen debate,&#8221; so-named because it took place at a model kitchen at a U.S. exhibition.<br \/>\n1969- Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the moon, splashed down safely in the Pacific.<br \/>\n1979- A Miami jury convicted Ted Bundy of first-degree murder in the slayings of two Florida State University sorority sisters.<br \/>\n1990- Iraq massed tens of thousands of troops and hundreds of tanks along its border with Kuwait.<br \/>\n1997- Retired Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan died at age 91.<br \/>\n2002- The U.S. House expelled Rep.
