Although the two days are closely connected, each holds a different meaning. Nov. 1 is traditionally dedicated to remembering children who have passed, while Nov. 2 honors deceased adults.

Among the most recognizable symbols of the celebration are marigolds and candles. Marigolds, often called the flowers of the dead, are believed to help guide the spirits of loved ones back to the celebration through their bright colors and strong scent. Candles are also placed on altars to represent light and help guide spirits home.

Through altar-making and other hands-on activities, students had the opportunity to learn about the meaning behind these traditions while celebrating the importance of family, remembrance, and cultural heritage.

Story by ARLENE MALDONADO Photos by BREANNA HOY Tiger Media Network Students gathered around at the Stouffer Lounge on Thursday, as the Hays HALO Club…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3397,3398,11
16619,16583,8738,106
post-100880","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-area-news","category-campus-news","category-news","tag-arlene-maldonado","tag-breanna-hoy","tag-dia-de-los-muertos","tag-fort-hays-state-university

https://i0.wp.com/tigermedianet.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Screenshot-2026-11-02-113258.png?fit=942%2C606
["GET
